February 22, 2023 marks a major milestone for us at Pina Earth. On this day, the world's first forest conversion project to increase the climate resilience of our forests was audited by a third party. Our external auditor TÜV Nord Cert GmbH has officially confirmed it:
With this validation report, we can now issue the firstCO2 certificates from our lighthouse project "Luckaitztal". At the beginning of the project, more than 600 hectares of the forest consisted of 88% pine trees. Over the course of the project, the forest will now be gradually transformed by (1) planting different tree species to increase structural and species diversity, (2) harvesting individual trees to make room for natural regeneration, and (3) wildlife management to prevent severe game damage to young trees. A total of 6 new species will be introduced, which is expected to increase species diversity by 367% (Shannon index). Our innovative approach makes it possible to reduce the barriers to the development of forest restoration projects.
The independent auditor TÜV Nord Cert audited and certified the project in accordance with the criteria of ISO standard 14064-2 for the certification of carbon credits. TÜV Nord Cert is a long-standing auditor and certifier of climate protection projects. Accredited by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), TÜV Nord is also active as a Verification & Validation Body (VVB) under Verra. To date, TÜV Nord Cert has already certified around 3000 projects (e.g. Clean Development Mechanism, Gold Standard, etc.).
The ISO 14064-2 standard sets out the guidelines for quantifying, monitoring and reporting emission reductions or removals at the project level. It contains requirements for the planning of a climate protection project and the identification of greenhouse gas sources, sinks and reservoirs (SSR) that are relevant to the project and the baseline scenario. It also includes requirements for the management of data quality.
